Description: Learn how to create these wonderful tribal type arts that are excellent for site logos.
Written by: Imusion

 Step 1
Create a new document. Take your pen tool, now here comes the hardest part of the tutorial, you make or break the tutorial here. Make something similar to what I've shown below in the animation below.

I'll explain it in words too if some of you haven't figured out how to do it yet.
- With the pen tool click once on an area on the canvas.
- Then move over roughly like what it shows in the animation.
- Get this part, click AND DRAG the pen tool so it creates a sort of "hump", then release your click.
- Move over some more and a little above then click and drag it so it creates an "upsidedown hump"(You shouldn't have to do much as the first hump will automatically curve the upsidedown hump).

 Step 2
Take the brush tool then go to the Paths palette.

 Step 3
Reset your colors then create a new layer. Right click on the "Work Path" and select Stroke Path. Right click again on the path and click on delete.

 Step 4
Here comes the most "Artistic" part so to say in this tutorial. So you have a transparent layer with the curvey line. This step is up to your creativity.
But most of you will start off by duplicating this layer with the curvey line. For the sake of this tutorial I'll explain how I created mine, but your not limited by these steps.

 Step 5
So now with this duplicated layer we're going to flip it horizontally. If you haven't touched it previously your image should look roughly like this.

 Step 6
Now create a new layer set by linking the 2 layers that have the curvey lines on them. Now duplicate this layer set.

 Final Product
>Voila! There you have it folks! There are just so many differnet ways to do this that you can come up with something different everytime and by changing just the slightest of things you can change the whole look of the image. Below are examples of a few final products.

- In this example I moved the duplicated layer set up like a couple of inches.

- In this example I moved the duplicated layer set up like a couple of MORE inches.

- This is getting a little ridiculous but YES, I moved it up even MORE to create this one, like I said changing the slightest of things can change the whole apperance of the image.

- Finally, this time I moved it down more from its original position.

- Wow, look at this, in this one on the first step I created a boomerang shape instead of that curvey line and instead of putting the thing in a layer set I just duplicated the transparent layer with the boomerang shape then rotated it 90° about 4-5 times.

Let's try this again... (damn spam code)

I'm lost in steps 2 and 3 (path options appear grayed out) using PS CS. This is a great tut and I would love to figure out how to create shapes more efficiently.

Any thoughts on what this newbie is doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

BreadSlicer: It shouldn't be much different I'm imagining.  If you follow the steps I'm assuming it should work.  If not I'm sorry but I don't use PS CS version. :(  Hopefully someone can assist him?

Very cool tribal art tutorial...But i would like to know what brush you used and/or what effects to get the image in step 3 with the black/white fade and sharp ends. Any help people? I have read the posts on this topic but none seem to be clear about it. Excellent tut. in any case :)

I just used a regular soft rounded brush.  Pick a smaller size and test to see.

This question has actually plagued me for a while...

How do i get pen tool to not fill in empty space? as in ill make the curve, then it fills in the inside of the curve with black (or whatever else the foreground color is) is there a way to get empty space as foreground, or change brush style, or something?

Great tutorial.  Something so simple is trivial most of the time.  This however has permitted me to create tribal elemental "icons" that live inside an appropriate colored glass orb and then placed in a game that uses the elements!

Thanks again.... you've made me bookmark this site as well.

Hi,

First of all: Great tutorial.
I have been using Photoshop for couple of years now and I'd say I'm not an amateur. I guess I have the same problem as some other posters, not managing to get the stroked curve to fade out. Could you maybe go through it step-by-step and think what common mistakes could be at fault?

I'd be very glad, as I would need this for a album release due very soon.

fairly easy and useful tut

HERES HOW U DO THE PATH THING

select the pen tool

in the top part of the screen there are 3 types of pen: choose the middle one called "Paths"

draw the curvy line

select the brush tool and choose a preset of your liking (a soft not very big brush should do the trick)

now rightclick the layer under the paths tab (on the right side of the screen) and select stroke path

select the brush (not pencil as defaulted) and check the pressure button

voila!
